Carbon Based Souls

Carbon Based Souls formed out of a desire to change the Our Smiling Jesus Band image. We'd grown tired of getting turned down for gigs because of our name so we tried to find a new, better name. Unfortunately we picked another long name that was difficult to remember. Also, using the initials CBS was a pretty lame idea. Ah, the folly of youth. Sigh.

Well, all that aside we headed down to Tennessee to make our second major recording, this one would be produced by Mitch Hinds. It's soooo much better than Nailed in terms of production quality, but we never truly completed it. This album, which still stands as one of the best things I've ever recorded, was never released. Carbon Based Souls broke up several months after the recording of this album despite efforts to replace the two band members that were either leaving for grad school or spiraling into heroin addiction.

Oh the 90s...

Alas, the songs:

  • Dignity- kinda like Breathe from Nailed, but much better production and more rocking lyrics
  • Wherewithal - um, pretty heavy rocking and wailing. This was my favorite to play live.
  • Insecurity - so much blazing guitar going on here and super sensitive-o-rama lyrics.
  • Serendipity - kinda slow. Nice harmonies.
  • Sope - short and sweet, like good pop should be!
  • Who Was That Girl - oh so radio harmonies -- a panty wetter.
  • Progress - would you believe more robo? I think Cal Sutmeran was at work here...
  • Skiis - acoustic interlude, 85% pretty.
  • A Very Cautious Stance - reminds me of Duran Duran only better and with smellier hair. Lots of notes and some beats.
  • Chocolate Rosary - still trying to live this one down, but our fan used to think it was pretty funny.
  • Antigone - this is where a wahwah pedal and Sophocles meet.
  • Time Traveler - what a dog. Like Jim Morrison's hemorrhoid or something.
  • Forlorne - for Lorne Greene, the western dude
  • Lisalee - beauty. Just Dan and Frank on acoustics here.
  • Love Llama - parental warning! you smell like poo!
